Position: Pipe Corporal
Year joined: 1985
Previous Bands: I took violin lessons as a kid, but I knew my father wanted me to take up the pipes at the Seaforth Armouries. I never had the chance to do that, but years later, when my career brought me back to Vancouver, I settled down in Ladner and met a neighbour who was a member of the DPPB. He introduced me to the band members and I started taking lessons and made it into the Band in 1985. The DPPB is the only band I have been a member of.
Career: I worked all over Canada and the Arctic in weather related fields, including weather observing, International Ice Patrol and the deployment of the Canadian network of offshore weather buoys. I retired from Environment Canada, Marine Atmospheric Data Acquisition Division in 2005.
Favourite Piping/Band Moment: In 1994, a few years after my father passed away, the DPPB performed at the Edinburgh Tattoo. I obtained tickets for my aunt and uncle, who lived close to Edinburgh, but had never seen the famous Tattoo. After the performance, my uncle came up to me with tears in his eyes, grasped my hand right with both of his and said in a thick Scottish brogue, “Your father would have been so proud”.
